Updated 4/03/01 (04:15)
North America, Central America, Pacific, and Caribbean
There was another great opening to the Americas. Chip stated "We worked everyone
who ran out yesterday and bought a six meter rig." The West Coast opening lasted from
1420 UTC to 2100 UTC. Many stations reported hearing them at 2230 UTC. Signal
strength was from S1 to S3. Many mobile stations worked him. Many Hawaiian contacts
were also made later that evening.
Europe and South America
Basically all continents have been worked owing to the excellent Mediterranean
openings. Several new countries were added today (CT, CT3, and ZB2). All in all this
is a good ending to great expedition. For those who did not work this one there will be
many opportunities to work Eliazar. The station favors Europe and South America
nevertheless on good openings the Pacific and American stations can be heard.
Finally, if you made a QSO with the DXpedition and you are not shown on the web page
send an email to me and I will respond in kind.

I was able to talk to Jack today. The weather is cool and overcast and it rains
frequently. At night they throw on a blanket. The hotel station is within a stone's throw
from the water at 120 feet high. They are eating a lot of lobster, which is not making
them too unhappy. One more day left. They will be departing on Tuesday.
West Coast Opening
Well it appears the propagation gods have heard our petitions and granted us one huge
opening! It was literally the biggest this season. To quote Jack, N6XQ, "We worked
the whole West Coast of the U.S.". The signals jumped to 59 +20-30 dB dropping to
S7 and remaining for hours. Another mobile station (N9JIM/M) got into the log. In
addition they worked several Midwest stations. Congratulations to all. This
unfortunately is between solar disturbances. Keep listening. The Magic Band is
unpredictable.
Europe, Middle East and South America
The second station also worked several new countries. It seems as if there is a pipeline
to the Mediterranean. The openings seem to be coincident. It is fortunate that two
stations are going. The second station also heard the West Coast S7 at the peak of the
opening. There is hope for those who miss this operation. I am sure Eliazar will be well
educated on 6 meter operating technique.

As expected the solar disturbances shut down the bands. This afternoon the team
reported that they have not made a single 6 meter contact today. Chip reported that they
have worked 26 countries so far on 6 meters. We also obtained the logs from station B.
The 6 meter contacts are posted below. Duplicate call signs indicate contact on two
modes. Also included are contacts from station A. These are 6 meter only. HF contacts
have not been relayed. A complete 6 meter station will remain on the island. Hopefully
there will be many opportunities to work Eliazar.

European Opening
Conditions to Europe were good. The station at Eliazar's QTH was working Europe on
50.200 MHz. Many openings occur at the same time. The team is attempting to operate
two stations simultaneously with the greatest frequency separation to reduce interference.
Several stations reported working the team. European station logs have not been relayed
to us. Again they are at the second QTH. The 10 meter liaison station is at the hotel.
South America, Central America, and North America Opening
Jack and Chip at the hotel station have been working U.S. and South America. The
opening to the West Coast was not as good as yesterday.
Where is Asia, Africa and the Pacific?
We have received no reports from Asia, Africa and the Pacific. Has anyone heard them?
Let us know what time to listen (email address above).
The group will be leaving the island on Monday so make every effort to listen for them
over the next two days.
9H1PA reported hearing 3G0Z for 2 hours. Unfortunately there were two EH stations
rag chewing on top of them while the CT stations had propagation. We have the same
problem here on the West Coast. Please remember that this is a rare one. Try to refrain
from rag chewing, calling in the blind, actively testing your antenna pattern and any other
unnecessary transmission that will cause QRM. You may not hear them or anyone else.
You are probably interfering with another's opportunity to work them. The best method
is to listen and watch the indicators (FM radio from South America around 48.900 MHz,
logger and cluster spots
( http://dxworld.com/50prop.html http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/50.html? )
or the 28.885 MHz liaison frequency. Time your calls when they are loudest. As is
always the case their location is very quiet. They will hear you before you hear them
and one ways are no contacts.

Updated 3/30/01 (04:45 UTC)
Today the three amigos installed the station at Eliazar's home (CE0ZIS). The antenna is
now at 45 feet. This will be Eliazar's permanent station after Jack, Roman, and Chip
leave. His QTH favors Europe and South America (See Map). The island blocks the
other directions. The hotel station antenna is on a bluff above the hotel on the other end
of the bay. It favors the US and Pacific (clear shot 300 degrees to 15 degrees). The
power situation at the hotel is intermittent. They are running on battery power. Please
contact me if you think there is an error or omission in the postings. I believe that the log
for the station at CE0ZIS is not represented in the listings. I will forward your inquiries
if propagation permits. The information was relayed from the hotel station on
28.885 MHz (N6RV).
West Coast Opening
Jack said he heard his own beacon for over a half hour
West Coast: K6QXY opening in Northern California started at 2116 UTC and ended at
2300 UTC. W6TOD works them from his car!
West Coast: W6CPL and K6ODV reported that they heard 3G0Z from 2145 UTC to
2340 UTC when they switched to the station at CE0ZIS.
West Coast: 0300 UTC Chip reports that he is still hearing N6XQ beacon on Point
Loma, CA. They proceeded to work into the San Diego area.

The stoic crew assembled the 6 element yagi and installed it at the primary station. The
field of view from each location favors different directions. Their intent is to have
coverage to all parts of the world. Tomorrow they will permanently install the 5 element
yagi at Eliazar's home, CE0ZIS. This as well as the IC551D will remain with Eliazar.
When in the beacon mode they will Transmit for 16 seconds and receive for 15 seconds.
There is usually someone listening so call during the receive period. Jack and Chip
discovered that TI2NA/B beacon is off the air.

Currently the adventurers are dining. They will return around 0100 UTC. The meals are
available only at prescribed times. The trip was long and uneventful. They report that
the island is beautiful, temperate with little humidity. They have temporarily put up
Zepps on 10 and 6 and a vertical. It is now dark and in the morning the first beam will go up. They will be ready to roar tomorrow.
Chip and Jack with 1 hour sleep in the last two days made their first 10 QSOs at 1900 UTC
with a temporary 6 meter Zepp.

It appears that Jack and Chip have landed safely on Isla Robinson Crusoe.
They will be dining on lobster at the QTH of CE0ZIS before moving on.

Just a last minute note to let everyone know we ( N6CA, XE2EED, N6XQ)
are departing tomorrow morning the 26th for a 6 meter DXpedition. If
everything goes on schedule we arrive in the village of Juan Bautista late
Tuesday afternoon. We will as a minimum have an omni up that evening to
check the band. We will have the yagi up the next morning.
Our Pilots are KB6NAN and N6RV. Full details and updates can be found at
the website: http://www.ham-radio.com/ce0z/ce0z.html
Activity from the sun looks encouraging. Don't forget to monitor 6 from
your mobiles, propagation may be excellent. Also remember the potential for
evening TEP. We will stay on 50.102 as the operating frequency and will be
making lots of noise. We hope to work all of you.
73 Chip, Roman, and Jack
This is the end my friend. I need to add this sentence so those with smaller monitors can see the whole country tally. I hope it works.
